Choose Well, Choose Life: A Vision for South Africa

Updated: Apr 29

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18)

I’m Dr. Benzi Nkabinde, an obstetrician who’s delivered countless babies over 34 years it is my dream that all the children we bring into the world will achieve their purpose. But today, I see South Africa’s teens struggling, and it stirs my heart. Our country, which we love, faces challenges. We’re unhappy with its direction, far from the hope of 30 years ago. We blame our painful apartheid past and leaders who’ve let us down. Yet, as King Solomon’s proverb reminds us, without vision, we falter. What’s our vision for South Africa in the next 30 years?

Why We Need a Vision

We must act, or in 30 years, our children could face a broken nation, scorned by others. But I believe we can choose differently. We can roll up our sleeves and build a thriving South Africa—a land of opportunity for all, not just a few; a country that’s strong, prosperous, and lends to many nations and borrows from no one. The past 30 years show this choice rests with us, not just politicians. Most of us won’t see this future, but we’ll be damned if we don’t help our youth reach it.

Starting with Choices

I believe it begins with the choices we and our teens make. As a doctor, I’ve seen how premature sex, teenage pregnancies, fatherlessness, drugs, and rebellion rob young people of their God-given destiny. That’s why I wrote Choose Well, Choose Life: A Guide to a Purpose-Filled Life for South African Teenagers. This book, rooted in medical, Christian, and cultural wisdom, helps teens navigate these challenges to become great citizens and lift our nation.

Vision SA 2054: Our Promise Land

Our vision is clear: Vision SA 2054: Our Children Must Enter the Promised Land. By 2054, we want a South Africa where every child thrives in a united, prosperous nation. This starts with teens, parents, teachers, schools, and even SAPS working together, guided by hope, faith, and the choices we make.

How You Can Help

Choose Well, Choose Life is a must-read for teens dreaming big and with parents guiding them. It’s available at outlets listed on my website. I’ll post weekly blogs there, unpacking the book’s topics to spark talks between teens and families. If this vision moves you:

  • Teens: Get the book. Take one step toward your purpose.

  • Parents: Read it with your teen. Build their future together.

  • Everyone: Subscribe, comment with one idea for our youth, or share this vision.

Let’s make choices today that shape a South Africa our children deserve.
